Mr. T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, arrived yesterday from Christchurch.

The Moscow radio has announced the death of Patriarch Sergius, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He was in his seventy-seventh year.

L.A.C. K. McGowan, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. McGowan, Cobden, has been promoted to Sergant Pilot on completion of his flying training.

The death occurred suddenly early this morning at the Grey Hospital, of Mr. Arthur James Flaherty. Deceased was a native of Maori Creek, aged 63 years, and had worked in the North Island and on the West Coast for many years. Following an accident in the bush last week he was admitted to hospital, but his condition did not _ cause anxiety until last night. He is survived by foui- brothers, James (Paroa), Edward (Greymouth), John (Auckland) and William (Runanga), and three sisters, Mesdames James O’Brien (Greymouth), J. Hansbury (Ross), and R. Moore (Auckland).

The. death occurred yesterday of Mr tiughic Smith, of Inangahua Junction, known throughout the West Coast as a poet, at the age of 92 years. A native of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, he came as a young man to the West Coast in the midseventies, prior to the Kumara rush, and had lived for 68 years in New Zealand. He was for 50 years a member of Robert Burns Masonic Lodge, Rael'ton. Four sons and four daughters survive him, the sons being Hugh (Taylorville), Harry (Kotuku), Robert (Blackball), and Harold (Reefton). The daughters are Mesdames R. Heslop (Reefton), H. Orpwood (Hokitika), T. Williams (Temuka). and Ross (Australia). The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at the Reefton Suburban C emetery.
