NAVAL MEN HONOURED.

WELLINGTON, March 21

The Governor-Genera] (Sir Cyril Newall) announces that the King has approved the following awards to members of the Royal New Zealand Navy:— DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS. Commander Stephen Wentworth Roskill, R.N. His wife is Mrs. E. Roskill, England. Commander Roskill joined the Royal New Zealand Navy on loan from the Royal Navy on September’ 17, 1941. He was born in Eng - land in August, 1903. The is for devotion to duty during a long period in dangerous waters’ and- for outstanding organising ability in action. Mr. Victor Edward Bull, commissioned engineer, R.N. His wife is Mrs. Catherine Bull, of England. Mr. Bull joined the Royal Navy as a boy artificer in January, 1917. He -was lent to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in April, 1928, where he served in H.M.S. Diomede and H.M.S. Dunedin until June, 1931. He subsequently .served again in the Dunedin from April 15, 1932, to February 19, 1933. in April, 1933, he was promoted warrant engineer and lent to the Royal New Zealand Navy in April, .1937, being promoted commissioned engineer in April, 1943. He was born in July, 1901. The award is for fine leadership and devotion to duty in action. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL. Chief Electrical Artificer William Robert Joseph Jones. His wife is Mrs. M. E. Jones, of Auckland. Mr. Jones joined the Royal Navy as an actingelectrical artificer (fourth class) in March, 1927. He was lent to the Royal New Zealand Navy in January, 1939, and has served in H.M.NIZ. ships afloat since that date. He was rated chief electrical artificer (second class) in July, 1936, and chief electrical artificer in April, 1940. The award is for courage and coolness, and for setting a fine example in action. Chief Shipwright John Weir Stewart (now temporary acting-warrant shipwright. Royal New Zealand Navy). His wife is Mrs. E. M. Stewart, of Auckland. Mr. Stewart joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in June, 1923, as a shipwright. He has served in H.M.N.Z. ships, being rated chief shipwright in 1937, and promoted temporary acting-warrant shipwright in 1943. He was born in 1903 in Scotland. The award is for coolness and efficiency in action. Stoker Petty Officer Albert Fickling. His wife is Mrs. I. E. Pickling, of Auckland.. Petty Officer Fielding joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a stoker in 1927. He was advanced to stoker petty officer in 1939. He was born in April, 1909, in London. Tb.e award is for coolness and courage in action.

Master-at-Arms Thomas Eric Tclerton. His wife is Airs. K. L. A. Tolerton, of Auckland-. Mr. Tolerton. joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a boy in 1927 and before the war saw service with the Royal Navy, rising to actingpetty officer and finally to master-a - arms in 1941. Surgeon Lieutenant - Commander Eric Snow McPhail, Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve. His wife is Mrs. I. M. McPhail, of Wellington. The award is for devotion to duty and the excellent manner ini which lie organised the medical department for action. Mr. Walter Henry Quick, temporary gunner, R.N.Z.N. His wife is Mrs. M. P. Quick, of South Devon, England. The award is for courage and coolness in action.

Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist Charles Joseph Rosbrook. His wife is Mi's. E. Rosbrook, of Melbourne, Australia. The award is for devotion to duty and the highly successful organisation of the wireless department for action..

Acting-Chief Engineroom Artificer (Temporary) Maurice Buckley. His mother is Mrs. F. Buckley, of Northwich, England. The award is for courage and coolness in action. Petty Officer Charles Alan Patchett. Hjs wife is Mrs. K. Patchett, of Auckland. The award is for courage and coolness and setting a fine example in action.

Norman Craven, sickberth attendant. His father is Mr. Charles Craven, of Whangarel. The award is for courage and devotion to duty in action.

WELLINGTON. March 22. r The Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) has received advice from the Admiralty that the King has approved ’the award of “Mentioned in Dispatches” to Temporary Lieutenant Murray Lawrence Heath, R.N.Z.N.V.R. for good service in the air at the landings at Salerno. His father is Mr. L. Heath, of Nelson. Heath joined the R.N.Z.N.V.R. in 1941 as a naval airman, and was promoted Temporary Sub-Lieutenant in 1942’ and Temporary Lieutenant in 1943. He was born at Ngatimota in 1916, and before joining the Navy -was tobacco farming.
