HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN COBRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 22. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, the following members being present: Crs. G. Heinz, C. Callari, S. G. Havill, E. W. Heenan, \V. H. Stopforth, L. S. Ross, K. Aitken, and T. W. Duff. A deputation was received from the Hokitika. Beautifying Association and ’Returned Services’ Association, consisting of Messrs. E. Green, T. N. Mitchell,B. King, T. Stuart, C. Hart, and S. J. Preston. The deputation asked support and assistance for a scheme for planting avenues in the streets. For a start, it was suggested to plant Fitzherbert Street and Park Street, and the type of tree recommended for this street was the Norfolk Island pine! Leiter it was proposed to plant other streets with desiduous trees. It would be a memorial to the soldiers not returning from this war. The initial cost would be £6O, of which the Council was asked io provide £45. The Association would carry put the work,

CT. Havill opposed planting any trees which had growth ar far as tlicpower lines'. The Mayor thought Cass Square should be pul in order first, and that the Beaut! lying Association could co-operate with that. Cr. Heinz suggested permission be given providing the Association find ail the cost. This was put as a motion, with the rider that the work be done under Council supervision.—Passed, only Cr. Havill voting against the motion.

The finance statement showed: Receipts, £lB3O/5/4; expenditure, £Bl9 2/10. Accounts amounting to £835 8/8 were passed for payment. The Abattoirs report showed: Stock slaughtered for month of February amounted to 40 cows, 7 heifers, 62 bullocks, 262 sheep, 76 lambs, 4 pigs, 13 calves; condemned, 2 cows, 1 heifer, 1 sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £lOl/3/1; fees for corresponding month lasi venr, £lO4 11/-.

The Secretary, Hokitika Fire Board, advising that the Board has been notified of overcrowding al one of the theatres through patrons blocking the - exists and passages by sitting on the steps, and asking whether this is a breach of the license.—Definitely a breach of the regulations. Mrs. E. Creagh, Sewell Street, pointing out that the partlyburnt cottage on section 1501, at the corner of Sewell and Tudor Streets is a menace in its present condition, and, asking that appropriate action be taken.- —Referred to Town Clerk. W. Perry and Co., application for permission to instal a septic tank on section 140, etc. —Granted subject to usual conditions. Park, Murdoch and James, agents for Mrs.. Ethel F. Dowell, application to subdivide section No. 788 into two parts, viz., lot 1 containing 17.44 perches, and lot 2 containing 18.56 perches; both sections will have access to a legal street.—Approved. A. -R. Elcock, as agent for James Fleming. application to subdivide section 1025 and part, sections 1024 and 1026, viz., lot 1, 1 rd. .02 perches, and lot 2. 1 rood .02 perches; each section will have a frontage to Hampden Street of 49’ feet.—Approved. H. W. S. Park, agent for H. J. McMillian, asking Council to accept transfer to the Council of .02 perches of frontage of section

3318 Rollestdn Street, for the purpose of a’public street as required by section 128 of the Public Works Act.— Accepted. Mrs. M. S. Rae, application to have footpath formed at the frontarc of part-sections 1275 and 1276, corner Park and Davie Streets.—Approved. Miss B. F. Goodie, Hampden Street, asking that the frontage to her properly be cleared of rushes and iprowth in order that she can make a Tawn along the frontage.—Approved. Mr. A. Barltrop, Hampden Street, askI ing what the Council would charge to iinstal a pipe drain at his garage m Davie Street, to pipe for 120 feet along the west side of Davie Street from Hampden Street to his garage.—lnformal ion supplied. F. Stewart, and two other residents, asking for an extension of the footpath in upper Brittan Street for a distance of between two and three chains between J. Moore’s and F. Stewart’s. —Works Committee to report. F. D. Gillespie, hon. sec. of All Saints Vestry, pointing out that the manhole cover of the Bealey. Street drain at the intersection of 'Bealey and Stafford Streets lifts off during floods, and there is the danger of someone stepping into the manhole; it is suggested that the manhole cover be hinged or bolted down.—Referred to Overseer for attention. Mrs. G. Mann, corner Jollie and Stafford Streets, stating that surface water Hoods into the front gate from off the footpath io a depth of a fool., and asking if something could be done to prevent this.—Referred to Overseer. Mrs. M. Straight, Livingstone Street, re flooding of her property by surface water. Mr. FI. L. Jones, asking for an extension of the sanitary service to his residence in North Sale Street. — No action taken. Mr. I-I. Kortegast, Rolleston Street, re flooding of his property by surface water, and pointing out that the road should be raised. — Road to be raised. M. Baird, Secretary Hokitika Cricket Club, asking for permission to hold one of the keys of the pavilion in Cass Square as the club stores gear and matting in the pavilion.—Granted.
