[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, February 12. Overseas furlough men were welcomed at the railway station by a large crowd. The Mayor (Mr A- R. Elcock) extended the good wishes of the community, the Municipal Band provided music, and a guard _ol honour was provided by the High School Cadets. . „ . . At a meeting of the Hokitika Businessmen’s Association Executive on Thursday evening Mr W. H. Stopforth presided. A request from the Lake Kanieri Boat Club for assistance with a regatta for patriotic purposes on Saturday, February 19, was discussed. The Association regretted being unable to agree to close the shops on Saturday morning, but was prepared to do anything in reason to encourage the club, it offered the use 01 its side-show gear for the occasion. The claims of Hokitika as an air-base, particularly its suitability as a trans-Tasman terminal, was discussed. and it was decided to urge the claim for its development. The need for new houses was stressed, and a request for new units to the Minister of Housing is to be put forward. The roughness of the Railway Street and approaches to the station were referred to, and it was decided to approach (the Department with a view to having this area tar-sealed and better lighted. The issue of the Telephone Directory amendments had brought forth many expressions of appreciation, and it was decided to write to the Postmaster and staff of the Post. Office for their co-operation in the matter. Congratulations are to be forwarded to Mr E. T. Stoop, on his appointment as Clerk and Treasurer to the Westland County Council. Mr H. C. Peart was nominated as businessmen’s representative on the Rehabilitation Board. Mr Parkhill reported on the conference with the Borough Council, R.S.A., and Beautifying Association, on town improvements, but further action was deferred. Mr Stopforth reported the compiling of the register for the renumbering of houses was well under way. A vole of sympathy with the relations of the late Tvlr D. J. Evans was passed. Accounts amounting to £ll/8/were passed.
