AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION
(N.Z.P.A. .Special Correspondent)
(Rec. 11.5) LONDON, Jan. 20. The trial was continued of the Hoyes case, when the Solicitor-General, who is leading prosecution for the Crown, read the deposition of Sir Archibald Rowlands, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aircraft Production. This stated that Armstrong came to see him on 4/3/43, upset and agitated. He said that he heard the police were making inquiries about certain transactions he had with Hoyes. Armstrong said he had loans from Hoyes and being new to the public service he did not realise it was a transgression of the rules. The loans were purely personal. Hoyes, in the witness box, said he first met Armstrong in New Zealand some years ago, and again met him in England in 1941. He met Bloss before the outbreak of the war. Hoyes said he had been associated with the Cuncliffe Owen Aircraft Limited since 1936, and held shares in the company. The hearing was adjourned.
