LONDON, January 20

Long-range guns, firing across the Straits of Dover, sank a large enemy vessel near the French coast. British and German guns duelled across the Channel for three hours to-day —the longest bombardment of the war.

“Hearty congratulations on the good shooting of the Dover guns’’ was the message sent oy the Prime Minister (Mr. Churchill), to-day, to the Commander of the Coast Artillery, East Kent District. The message followed the sinking, last night, by coast gunfire of a large enemy vessel near Cap Gris Nez. The sinking was confirmed by R.A.F. Typhoons, one of whose pilots also' found a smaller ship two miles offshore west of Calais, lying with a marked list and smoke pouring from the waterline. COMMANDS ANNOUNCED RUGBY, January 20. The Admiralty announces the following flag officers were recently appointed to seagoing commands:--Vice-Admiral A, J. Power, RearAdmiral C. Moody, and Rear-Ad-miral A. W. L. Bisset. Rear-Admiral J. Mansfield has been appointed to command the cruiser squadron formerly commanded by Rear-Admiral C. H. J. Harcourt, and the latter will shortly take up a shore appointment at Home.

It is also announced that RearAdmiral H. R. G. Kinahan has relieved Rear-Admiral U. T. C. Walker as Director of Personal Services. Rear-Admiral Warner will shortlv be given another appointment. The‘following flag officers have been given shore appointments abroad:—ViceAdmirals H, B. Rawlings and A?. M Peters.
