H.M.S. TASMAN
CHRISTCHURCH, January 20
“This is a unique occasion as it is the first time a naval establishment has existed ashore in the South Island as an independent command,” said Commander T. S. Critchley, naval officer in charge at Lyttelton when the training establishment at Lyttelton was commissioned as H.M.S. Tasman. “This is a very important day and it is the duty of all hands to see that this ship is a success. I appeal particularly to those of you who are from the South Island as it is your show. I want this to be a happy ship and I want to feel that people are pleased to be posted to H.M.S. Tas. man This all depends on discipline, not by the fear of punishment which, is quite foreign to our New Zealand tradition, but by the spirit and endeavour of everyone. We are starting to-day with a clean sheet—keep it clean. In appearance every man and woman here is, in my opinion, beyond reproach and I want H.M.S. Tasman to be kept like that.” Commander Critchley spoke to the officers, ratings and wrens at the division’s headquarters yesterday and afterwards inspected the establishment.
