HOKITIKA, January 19. I The Hokitika Borough Council met i last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr. |sA. R. Elcock, Crs. W. 11. Stopforth, £. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, D. P. Stuart, iC. Caliari, K. Aitken, S. G. Havill, land T. W. Duff. ~ I Mr. N. Atkinson, North Revell Street, waited on the Council with a complaint that a neighbour had erect- , ed a fowl house behind his (Atkin- ; son’s) house, and had obstructed his access to the beach.—The Council decided to adhere to its Previous decision that the permission granted Mi. Connors tb build the fowl house was conditional on its being within his own boundary. The Treasurer’s statement (two months) stated: Receipts £652/11/9; expenditure £1122/16/11. Accounts amounting to £llB2/19/1 were passed for payment. , j , Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for months of November and December amounted to 68 cows, 61 heifers, 76 bullocks, 242 sheep, 206 lambs, 8 Digs 1 calf. Condemned: One cow. Fees collected for two months amounted to £l9O/19/-. Fees for corresponding months last year amounted to £196/11/5 The Mayor welcomed Cr. b. G. Havill back to the Council after service in the Pacific. The foreman’s and sexton s reports were read and approved. The Mayor congratulated the Baths Committee on the efficiency in which thev had carried out their work. He moved that an application for on extra water connection from the Weld Street main be granted. The Council ratified the proposal to erect a learners’ pool at the baths.

CORRESPONDENCE. ' From the District Manpower Officer Greymouth, authorising the employment of five registered and eligible married men oh a subsidy basis of £3/10/- a week for a further period of 13 weeks from December 27 1943. Frbm’Mr. D. A. Stuart, Hall Street, Hokitika, application for grazing rights over approximately two acres of 3 Whitcornbe- Square nearest to Park Street, the area being partly fenced off from the north end of the section. Grazing rights to be for a period of two years or more, dependant on applicant still being employed in this district. —Granted, rights to be temporary only. "From Mr. Grant. Michel drawing attention to Hie fact That although warning notices have been erected by the Council, people are still carting the surface of the street away about the intersection of the Town Belt and North Revell Street. Applicant suggests that the sand pit be closed altogether to prevent any more of the street being carted away. —Foreman to inspect and report. From Mrs. Gideon Anderson. Sewell Street (and 25 other petitioners) asking: (1) That Upper Sewell Street be tar sealed; (2) than the foot-1 paths be (graded and tar sealed; (3) that the existing roadway, which is not in the centre of the street be adjusted before the street is tarsealed.—To be advised this section is to be sealed in due course.

Christchurch, advising that a sample of water taken from the Hokitika Reservoir on November 22, 1943, has been analysed and is found to be satisfactory. From Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, conveying rhe season s greetings to the Council, intimating that he is retiring and that his successor, Dr. J. H. Blacklock, will be taking charge of the "West Coast distiict on January 6, but that he will visit the Coast with Dr. Blacklock at a date to be advised later. From Mr. C.
