Further attacks on enemy shipping are recorded in General MacArthur’s communique to-day. It states: Our heavy units attacked enemy shipping in Ambon Harbour, setting fire to a. 900-ton merchant. ship. Three ol eight intercepting fighters were shot down and one other probably destroyed. A 2000-ton cargo ship was bombed at Admiralty Islands, leaving it stationary and smoking. At Arawe,' our ground forces attacked and drove the enemy back, clearing the area 100 yards beyond our perimeter We captured a portion of one o! hi*’ field batteries and 28 machineguns He abandoned 139 dead on the held Our fighters sank two enemy supply laden surface-craft in Marne Bay. U.S.A. RAILWAYMEN. WASHINGTON. January 18. Mr. Roosevelt announced the settlement of the railroad wage dispute under which non-operating workers will receive increases of nine"to 11 cents hourly. Mr. Roosevelt said he would authorise Mr. Stimson immediately to relinquish Army control ol railroads. The settlement provides that non-operat-ip°* employees, receiving loss tjian hourly will be increased by. 11 cents Those receiving 47 to 57 cents will be increased by 10 cents. All others will be increased by nine cents The Chairman of the House Military Committee (Mr. May) announced the Committee postponed indefinitely the National Service legislation requested Mr Roosevelt..
