WATERSIDERS’ PROTEST.

[TO THE EDITOR.] „ Sir, —At a special meeting of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union, held this morning, members expressed resentment of Mr. Mitchell’s remarks regarding the Coast girls and the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “That the members of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union strongly protest against the statement of Mr. Mitchell at the Appeal Board meeting regarding the refusal of the West Coast girls to go to Wellington owing to the absence of the Marines from that town, and consider that Mr. Mitchell owes the Coast girls a public apology. Yours, etc., E. HILLMAN, Secretary.

When Mr. Mitchell was invited to comment on the above letter he pointed out that the remarks alluded /to were made in a facetious vein and, as indicated by the “Star’s” report were so treated bv the Court. He regretted that anyone should feel aggrieved by what was meant to be a’ humorous observation and added that the remarks were not intended in any way to be a reflection on the moral character of the girls of the Coast. Ed., “Star.”
