BOWLING

RINKS MATCHES DUNEDIN, January /18. The third and fourth rounds of the fours competition were played at the championship tourney of the New Zealand Bowling Association to-day. At the end of the day only 19 of the 246 fours competing remained unbeaten. Games during the day provided the usual quota of upsets, but several, players with distinguished records in championship play are still unbeaten. Heavy rain fell last evening. This slowed up the greens. There was brilliant sunshine, but the bowlers had to contend with a tricky north-westerly wind. Following are the skips of unbeaten rinks at the end of the fourth round: E. 0. Henshaw (Ashbury, Timaru), J. McGrath (Alexandra), p. Munn (Canterbury), D. Haswell (Blenheim), W. J. Balch (Central, Winton), H. Wilson (Mt. Eden), S. Riach (Taieri), J. Coulter (N.E. Valley), J- Stoddart (Kaikorai), R. Haworth (Canterbury), W. Purdie (St. Clair), F. L. Taylor (Kaituna), M. J- Squire (Hawera), J. Veitch (Dunedin), C. A. McDonald fN.E. Valley). K. E. Ewing (Stratford), S. Hutchison (Caledonian), O. Grant (Invercargill), and L. J. Edwards (Balclutha). Among those to register a third win in a row were: MacDonald (Balmacewen), Raich (Winton), Cochrane (Ohai), Hungerford (Caledonian), Morrison (Dunedin), Haswell (Blenheim), Tilbert (Kelburn), Riach (Taieri), Squire (Hawera), Veitch (Dunedin), Hutchison (Caledonian), Upton (Kaikorai), McCarten (St. Kilda), Barton (Auckland), Edwards (Balclutha), Clark (Ashbury), Caley (Central Petone), Marshall (Anderson’s Bay), McGrath (Alexandra), and Henshaw (Ashbury). Features were the iorm displayed by the champion Canterbury rink, skipped by P. Munn, and by a four skipped by his club mate, R. Haworth, also the play of the Mt. Eden' team, with H. Wilson as skip; and good performances of a number of fours from Dunedin clubs and also by M. J. Squires’ Hawera rink. Munn’s team won all its games by comfortable margins. It scored 26 to 11 win against J. F. Smith’s Temuka rink, but was well extended by R. H. Taylor’s Beckenham four, the final score being 25 to 18. Wilson, twice skip of a champion four, is skipping a four which has shown good form from the start, and scoi-ed its third win against L. W. Besley’s New Brighton rink by 28-22, and won even more comfortably by 27-12 against XI. A. Rendle (Upper Hutt). Haworth won two good scoring games, defeating C. W’ L. Rowland (Balmoral) 27-19 and P. Delahunty (Kaikorai) 29-24. A former champion skip, W. Bremner (Auckland), after winning both games on the first day, went under in the third round to a Christchurch four skipped by the well-known Canterbury player, R. A. Barnsdale, the score being 23-17. In the afternoon, the Auckland players were again defeated, this time by M. J. Squire’s team. Squire and J. Veitch (Dunedin) are skips of unbeaten rinks in this section, which is a very strong one. Squire scored a 23-16 win against A. F. Anderson’s Roslyn four in the third round, and defeated Bremner’s team by 24-18. Veitch wort both his games comfortably, beating J. Johnson (Lower Hutt) 33-13, and. A. T. Robertson (Anderson’s Bay) 29-20.

After winning the first two games in particularly impressive fashion. Jiatt’s Dunedin fink fell victim to W. Eft’ord’s Edgeware four by 27 to 12, but in the next round scored a win against R. Breach (Rakaia). All the teams in this section have lost at least one game and G. A. Deare (Carlton) suffered two losses, his second at the hands of T. Gray’s Kelburn four, 23-17. W. Purdie is skipping a St. Clair four which, on the St. Clair green, continued to display match-winning form. The St. Clair men had an easy win by 24-10 against G. P. Mappiebeck Newtown), and won fairly comfortably against S. Preece (Gore/). F. L. Taylor (Kaituna) was hard pressed by C. Madsen (Opawa) to win by a two-point margin, but he won his fourth game against W. E. Jelly (Cromwell) fairly comfortably. S. Hutchison (Caledonian), who was playing on Anderson’s Bay green, scored well in both games, defeating M. Campbell (Southland) 35-15 and W. Petrie (Opoho) 30-16. Southland is represented at the tournament by a record entry for that centre. Among those playing good bowls was O. Grant’s Invercargill rink, while W. J. Balch’s Central Winton rink not only scored well, but a'lso stopped the winning run of A. W. MacDonald (Balmacewen). W. Gilbert (Kelburn), who is skipping a well-balanced four, met his first defeat at the hands of S. Shirriffs (Mt. Eden) by 28-20. Both Gilbert and Shirriffs have scored three wins in their section, in which the only unbeaten team is S. Riach’s Taieri combination. Shirriffs’, however, played confident bowls to win both games. There was some high scoring on Logan Park green, where T. McCarten (St. Kilda) had a winning run halted in a spectacular fashion by W. E. Hunt (Helensville). Hunt inflicted a defeat on the St. Kilda men by a big margin of 45 points to 8, the biggest score registered to date. There are no unbeaten teams in this section, but T. Ferguson (Balmacewen), W. F. Hadwin (Lower Hutt), P. C. Harding (West End, Timaru), McCarten, and Hunt each has three wins to his credit.
