DECISIONS AT GREYMOUTH.

1 The Armed Forces Appeal Board held a further session at Greymouth, yesterday afternoon, when miscellaneous cases were considered. Mr. W. Meldrum presided, with him Messrs P. J. McLean and A. Panther, ■Mr. C. F. Shapcott being Secretary. The Union Steam Ship Co. of N.Z., Ltd., appealed for L. F. Anderson, clerk, married, one child. Mr. S. J. Davis, manager, said Anderson was , chief clerk and accountant at Greymouth. He had been with the firm for 23 years. Five members of the staff were in the forces.—Adjourned sine die.

He staled that there had been no i change in the position since the preI vious hearing, the business being t much greater than could be handled. ■ —Adjourned sine die. Gilbert Bros. (Mr. W. D. Taylor) 'appealed for R. J. Warburton, watchmaker, married. Mr. T. Heiniger, a ; proprietor, said there was no relaxa- ■ tion in the pressure of business, and repairs were in arrears. Efforts to obtain a watchmaker had been fruitless. —Adjourned sine die. Riversdale Dairy Supplies (Mr. Taylor) appealed for A. J. Carson, truck driver, married. Mrs. I. M. Norton, a proprietor, said the manpower position had deteriorated, two youths having been replaced by two without experience, one of whom would shortly join the Air Force. Ani other employee had left. Reservist worked all hours of the day and night and his services were indispensable to the company.—Adjourn- . ed sine die.

L. S. Robertson, chemist, married, three children, lodged his own appeal. Mr. A. M. Jamieson called appellant, who said the circumstances nad not changed during the last 12 months. He had only one unqualified assistant. —Adjourned sine die. The Manpower Officer appealed for V. E .Thomas, civil servant, married, two children. Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell stated the position regarding the work of the Department had not changed, except that it had probably increased. Reservist’s duties had been increased by the rehabilitation proposals and he deputised for witness, being the only permanent officer of the National Service Department.— Adjourned sine die, Mr. Mitchell stating that reservist had been withdrawn from camp against his will and did not himself desire that an appeal be lodged. N. R. Lammas, dairy factory assistant, single, was'appealed for by. the Golden Coast Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd. Mr. E. W. Miller, manager, said he was employed at Reefton as second assistant and had been with the company for about 10 years. —Adjourned sine die. R ,F. Woodhouse appealed lor H. W. Beams, electrical engineer, single. Appellant said Beams was a journeyman electrician and was studying' to become a registered wireman. He was employed full time in the repair of industrial machinery. Work was about six weeks behind. —Adjourned sine die. T. Croft, appealed for J. G. Croft, bushman, married, one child, and R. G. C. Martin, mining timber supplier, married, three children. Both were employed full-time in cutting mining timber at Kopara. Normally the Dobson and Blackball mines were supplied. —Adjourned sine die. FOUNDRY APPEALS. Sine die adjournments were granted in the following appeals by the pispatch Foundry Co. (Mr. W. P. Hambleton): — i W. K. Horrack, fitter, single. E. G. Gilmore, fitter, single. G. W. Nelson, assistant boilermaker, single. J. Critchley, apprentice engineer, single. W. W. McKechnie, engineer’s draughtsman, married, one child. R. Beumelberg, engineer’s apprentice, single. O. M. Bierne, married, two children, R. A. Carr, married, R. R. Poschich, married, two children, R. A. Ramsay, single, boilermakers. E. W. Thomas, moulder, married, two children. D. R. Hart, apprentice engineer, single. The Bank of New South Wales appealed for Norman Frederick Every, bank clerk, aged 26, married, three children. Mr. R. E. Taylor,.manager, said Every was on the Hokitika staff and could not be replaced by any men returning on furlough. . The branch was down to its minimum male staff of two. —Adjourned sine die. , , „ Ogilvie and Co.. Ltd., appealed for W. O. Tennerit. sawmill hand, married, two children. Mr. W. T. Ogilvie said Tennent was released from camp in October, 1942, to help erect a new sawmill at Gladstone, and had been granted several fresh extensions. The work was still making progress and it would take at least six months to complete the mill building and accommodation would have to be built as well, involving at least eight or 10 cottages.—Adjourned sine die. The appeal of Ogilvie and Co., Ltd., for the release from camp of Laurie James Wickes, single, was reviewed, Wickes having left camp in 1942. He desired to enter the Air Force. Mr. F. L. Turley, Timber Advisory Committee, said it objected to Wickes being taken away, as he was an experienced worker. Mr. Ogilvie, however, would not oppose the release of Wickes.

Reservist, in evidence, said he was very anxious to serve in the Air Force. He had been released from camp, as it had been 10 months then before he could go overseas. Two brothers were now overseas, and he thought it was his duty to go also. His father had for a time served in the Air Force. He did not think any man was indispensable. “Thank you. I’m very much obliged.” said reservist when the Board dismissed the appeal, thus enabling him to serve. Delivering a reserved decision, the Board granted a sine die adjournment in the appeal by the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association for A. G. Hahn. The Greymouth Borough Council annealed for the release from camp of'William McNaughtan, married, two children, a former employee. Mr. A. J. Fairmaid, Borough Engineer, said his services were required by the Gas Department as a lorry driver for coal and coke to replace a man who had been permitted by the Manpower Officer to leave.—Appeal dismissed. TO-DAY’S CASES When the Board sat this morning, Mr. P. J. O’Regan substituted for Mr. McLean on the Board. Twenty-nine cases were set down for hearing. Duncan McLean, Ltd., appealed for G. W. Gunn, accountant, married, two children. Mr. L. McGlashan stated that Gunn occupied a key position and could not be replaced; he had 21 years’ service and had sole control of i cash and accounts. —Adjourned sine i die. Baillie, Neville and Co.. Witness and Shaw both worked 60 hours a week.—Adjourned sine die. The Runanga Co-on. Society (Mr. T. Bowes) appealed -for D. J. Piner, baker, single: L. Hall, driver, married, two children, and R. S. Airns,

driver, married. Evidence was given that all three men were busier than ever before in coping with increased business. None could be replaced.— Adjourned sine die. P. Beck (Mr. W. D. Taylor) appealed for A. Beck, grocer, married, one child. Appellant stated that a girl had recently left and had not been replaced, while a boy would be joining the Navy shortly. Because of his own ill-health witness could not conduct the business without his son.— Adjourned sine die. j. Haisty (Mr. Taylor) lodged his own appeal as a grocer, married, three children. He said he serviced Blackball, Roa and Ngahere, having large rounds. Before the war his staff was four, and now there were only himself and a girl.—Adjourned sine die.

M. McDonnell (Mr. J. W. Hannan) appealed for D. Hunt, storeman,- married, three children. Mr. J. P. Gilbert secretary, said Hunt had been with the firm ten years and could not be replaced by any other member of the staff. —Adjourned sine die. K’s Cash Stores (Mr. Hannan) appealed for C. V. Adam, grocer, married. Mr. L. Watt, manager, stated that Adam was employed at Hokitika and could not be assisted by transfers from other branches. He was the only experienced man in the shop.—Adjourned sine die. G. C. Hay, grocer, married, two children (Mr. Jamieson) lodged his own appeal. He stated that he carried on business at Karoro, being the only store between the Hospital and Paroa. If his business closed, the residents, whom he also served with bread, would lack a service.—Adjourned sine die.

W. D. Clark, timber-cutter, married, two children, applied for leave to adopt the appeal of Westland Transport, Ltd. Evidence was given that he was cutting timber for the Paparoa Mine, which could use all the available output.—Adjourned for further evidence.

Dunn’s Transport, Ltd. (Mr. Taylor) appealed for L. Dunn, single, and H. F. W. Elwood, married, one child, contractors. T. J. Dunn, a director, stated that flax was carted from Barrytown to the Rapahoe station, also coal. There were five trucks constantly on the road.—Adjourned sine die. Westland Transport, Ltd., (Mr. Hannan), appealed for L. H. Lee, truck driver, married, two children, and G. O’Brien, lorry driver, married. Mr. J. M. Eadie, managing-director, stated that both men carted timber, also r petrol. Before the war there were 22 employees, now there were eleven.—Adjourned sine die. A. B. Spiers, Kumara, appealed for J. G. Malcolmson, service-car driver, married, two children. Appellant said it had not been possible to replace reservist and he had not yet received definite word from the Government about the disposal of the business. The Transport Committee said it could not recommend further exemption, but appellant said he could not obtain a suitable man and could not himself drive the vehicles. — Adjourned three months for review, with an intimation that all steps possible should be taken to replace reservist. GARAGE STAFFS Grey Motors, Ltd., appealed for P. O. Couchman, workshop foreman, married, two children; H. H. Robinson, mechanic, married two children; and G. Sansom, clerk, married, two children. Mr. W. E. J. Steer said the staff had been reduced from 15 mechanics and nine apprentices before the war to 5 and 3, respectively. The two first-named men were A Grade mechanics. Sansom had worked overtime three nights a week and at week-ends.—-Adjourned sine die. T. B. Baty (Mr. Taylor) appealed for A. G. King, mechanic, married, two children. Mr. Baty gave evidence that the staff position had deteriorated with the departure of his son. Reservist worked eight hours overtime a week and had more business than he could handle. Witness worked 12 hours a day.—Adjourned sine die.

Mrs. I. McGlashan (Mr. Taylor) appealed for A. Johnson, mechanic, married, two children. She tendered evidence that an A Grade mechanic had been directed to her firm from Auckland, but would remain only three months. Johnson worked 12 to 14 hours’ overtime a week.—Adjourned sine die.

Brown and Walters Ltd., (Mr. Taylor) appealed for the continued release from camp of L .A. Baynes, apprentice, single. Mr. G. Walters, a director, stated that for some time the staff had been working 44 hours instead of 40 every week. There was more work available than could be handled.—Adjourned sine die.

Kennedy Bros (Mr. Hannan) appealed for H. R. Kirk, mechanic, single. Mr. W. Kennedy, manager, said that Kirk was the only qualified mechanic in the company’s employ and was absolutely essential.—Adjourned sine die.

Herb. Moore (Mr, Hannan) annealed for P. W. Fisher, baker, single. He said he employed a staff of "21there were only two full-time bakers compared with four previously. Fisher was in charge of small-goods and a man to replace him could not be obtained.—Adiourned sine die. , T. Howson (Mr. Taylor) appealed for D. M. Mulqueen, baker, single. Mr. Taylor said Mulqueen was suffering from occupational dermatitis and would be out oi the industry for some time; he would be reboarded. Adiourned for reboarding report E. W. Dumpleton. baker, Blackball, married, two children, lodged his own appeal. He said he .was the only baker in Blackball, and served the surrounding districts. He employed a journeyman baker and a boy.—Adjourned sine die. I
