The Transport Department is becoming perturbed by the widespread deterioration in the condition of tiansport and similar vehicles, owing to the lack of spare parts and the shortage of motor mechanics to carrv out repairs. Mr. G. F. Poole, Vehicle Inspector, Greymouth, tendering evidence to the Armed Forces Appeal Board, this morning, stated that there were nowhere near enough mechanics to keep the vehicles up to the mark. On the West Coast the position had become very bad, especially during the last six months, and there was evidence that this situation was general Spares were not available for a large number of popular makes of trucks and mechanics had to improvise’ Every garage had vehicles waiting to be repaired,, and there was nobody available to fix them, preference being given to industrial and other essential vehicles.
