DECISIONS AT GREYMOUTH.

Fifty-eight cases were set down for hearing by the Armed Forces A.ppeal Board in Greymouth, to-day, including 28 by the Public Works Department. Mr. W. Meldrum presided, with him Messrs P. J. McLean and A. Panther. Mr. C. F. Shapcott was Secretary. AU except two reservists were Grade 1, ope being Grade 2 and the other requiring remedial treatment. Sine die adjournments were granted in the following cases from the Public Works Department:— Electrical Department (Mr. A. E. Davenport).—A. J. Fischer, surfaceman, married, three children. P. J. Whitiskie, surfaceman, married, three children. R. J. Rogers, surfaceman, married, one child. J. D. Keenan, lorry driver, married, one child. J. Byrne, surfaceman, married, two children. J. Ford, bridge foreman, married, one child. C. E. Mitchell, bridge carpenter, married, one child. W. H. Watt, mechanic, married. C. W. Magee, labourer, married, three children. Engineering Department (Mr. E. F. Evans). —F. Millar, engineer’s assistant, married, two children. The Public Trust Office appealed for C. F. Cockburn, clerk, married, one child. Mr. W. R. Millier stated tha.t reservist had over 20 years’ service and was attached to the Greymouth office, where the staff had been reduced from 19 to 13.— Adjourned sine die. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research appealed for A. E. Hill, field assistant, single; H. W. Wellman, geologist, married, one child; and W. A. Sara, field assistant, married, one child. Mr. H. E. Fyfe, senior geologist, gave evidence of the operations of coal survey parties in the district. The men all had special qualifications.—Adjourned sine die.

Mrs. C. Essex appealed for J. A. Essex, bread' deliveryman, single. r lhe appeal had earlier been dismissed, subject to reservist not being required 'to serve overseas. —Further exemption recommended. F. ’A. O’Donnell, farmer, single. Grade 2. aged 32, lodged his own appeal, the case having been called on the representations of the Primary Production Council. The Board dismissed the appeal in October, 1942, service being postponed till December, 1942. Subsequently a further postponement was granted, but reservist had been graded two and had not yet been called up. He stated that on the farm at Marsden lie was milking a dozen cows, had ;00 run cattle, and kept 130 to 140 pigs, including 15 breeding sows. Milk was supplied to a vendor. Reservist had no assistance. The Production Council supported the appeal, which was adjourned sine die.
