Mr and Mrs G. E. Poole left for Christchurch, last evening. Mr B. R. Casey left this morning, for Wellington. Rev. Father B. Keegan, C.F., will leave, this evening, for Westport. Hon. M. Connolly, M.L.C.,. and Mrs. Connolly, Dunedin, are visiting , Runanga. ' Lt. R. March will leave this evening for Christchurch, en route to Nelson on return. Messrs C. Flannagan and N. Borlase left this morning to join the R.N.Z.N. Mr. E. Cooper, ■ acting-Officer-in-Charge of Goods, Railways Department, Greymouth, has resumed duty after prolonged sick leave. Mr W H. Parfitt, Chairman of the Greymouth Fire Board, was accorded a motion of sympathy by the Board, last evening, in the death 01. his wife. Mr. Justice Finlay took his seat on the Supreme Court Bench for the first time yesterday in Wellington, i when a defended divorce case came before him. —P.A.

Mr H. Patterson, formerly Supervisor of the telegraph branch of the Post and Telegraph Department, Greymouth, and now Postmaster at Foxton, left this morning, on return to Foxton.

Lc. A. A. Treloar, Railway Construction and Maintenance Group, has been promoted to the rank of Captain, according to a Gazette notice. Capt. Treloar was formerly on the staff of the Public Works Department at Westport.

Rev. P. Kirkham left, this morning, for Auckland, where he will be one of the representatives of the Nelson diocese at the Anglican General Synod. In the absence of Mr Kirkham, Archdeacon T. J. Smith, of Nelson, will be acting-Vicar of Holy Trinity Church.

A London cablegram stated that Mrs. Reginald McKenna, the widow of Rt. Hon. Reginald McKenna, who died last month, was killed when she fell out of a train between Guildford and London. She was a sister-in-law of Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg.

The death occurred yesterday, after a lengthy illness, at 26 Pirie Street, Wellington, of Mrs Ellen Grace, wife of Mr J. Grace, formerly of Greymouth. For "many years deceased conducted a fruit and confectionery business in Mawhera Quay. She left to reside in Wellington some years ago.

The funeral of Mr. Joseph Davies, oi Wallsend, who succumbed to injuries received in the Wallsend mine, was held at the Karoro Cemetery this afternoon in the presence of a large number of milkers and representatives of the R.S.A. Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducted the service at the graveside, where the Last Post was sounded.

Messrs F. A. Kitchingham (Mayor), J. D. McDonald (Greymouth Borough), W. Fisher, J. RyalL M.L.C. (Grey County), A. R. Elcock (Mayor of Hokitika), E. Rowley and D. J. Evans (Westland County) will represent West Coast local bodies at a conference of South Island local bodies at Christchurch to-morrow.

The funeral of the late Mr. George William Harrison took place at Karoro Cemetery this morning, and was largely attended. Rev. Dr. G. Harrison, of Christchurch, son of deceased, celebrated Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, where there was a large congregation, and Rev. Father Long conducted the service at the graveside. The cortege included representatives of West Coast and Christchurch clergy, who assisted at the services.

News has been received at Auckland of the appointment of Captain Stanley D. Jupp to the rank of Commodore U.S.N. Commodore Jupp is the New Zealand representative of the Commander of the South Pacific area and the senior ranking U.S. Naval officer in New Zealand. He has had wide experience, beginning in the Great War, and has served in both surface and underwater ships. He also occupied important shore posts prior to his appointment to New Zealand as U.S. Naval Commanding Officer in New Zealand. In September, 1942, he was commanding officer of the submarine U.S.S.
