Trainer Disqualified: J. Phillips, trainer of Kindergarten, has been disqualified for 12 months by the Hawke’s Bay District Committee, the disqualification starting on September 1. Phillips was granted a license to train last season, taking over Mr E. N. Fitzgerald’s horses, including Kindergarten, and apparently, when making' his application to the New Zealand Placing Conference for a license to train, he failed to give particulars of information considered necessary. Kindergarten will be prepared for Spring racing by P. Spratt at Trentham.—P.A.

RICCARTON NOTES GERALDINE MEETING REVIEWED [SPECIAL TO “STAR."] CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 23. The Geraldine Racing Club’s annual meeting served to introduce to racegoers an outstanding galloper in Sal’s Pal, a well-grown chestnut gelding by Salmagundi from Waiau Maid, a relative of Pink Note and Pink Terrace, two big winners in years gone by. He was practically neglected by investors in the first division of the Ohapi Hack Handicap, and was actually not seen in the race- until Paper Lily appeared to have the issue in safe keeping. He then bowled along at what looked an ordinary canter, but still wore down the speedy Paper Money filly without his rider finding it necessary to give him much assistance. It was one of the most impressive performances by a young galloper seen in the South Island for many years, and much interest will naturally be attached to his future activities.

Overweight: Unfortunately for his comparatively few supporters, Sal’s Pal was not to hold the honours for long, as his rider, R. J. Mackie, weighed in 81b overweight, and had only declared for 11b overweight. It transpired that when Mackie weighed out, he was told by the Clerk of the Scales that he was lib over 9st, but when the entry was made in the book the clerk merely altered the original figure of 8.7 to 8.8, and the owner of the gelding signed the alteration in the ordinary way, evidently not being aware of the mistake. The stewards had no recourse but to disqualify Sal’s Pal for the race. Sal’s Pal was brought, to the Grand National meeting by the Gore trainer, J. Cochrane, but not. raced, and he was left with A. S. Ellis, who took him to Orari. He was sent back to Gore after the meeting, and will no doubt make his next appearance at Wingatui.

Good Display: Sir Gundi was responsible for a very attractive effort in winning the Geraldine Cup, giving L. J. Ellis his first win of the season. He has furnished into a big gelding, and is capable of winning some important handicaps this season.

Smart Galloper: The three-year-old filly Royal Flight outclassed her opponents in the Squatters’ Handicap, and returned a very small dividend. She is undoubtedly a smart galloper, and will be in strong demand in the Dunedin Guineas. On her two recent races, the Riccarton three-year-olds should not trouble her over a mile journey, and unless Invulnerable is well forward he will have his work cut out to dispute matters with her. Her ownerbreeder, Mr D. M. Tweedie, has had a wonderful run with, the progeny of Francolin, and his two-year-old Bonny Flight, a sister to Royal Flight, promises to collect the . McLean Stakes at Wingatui.

Mild Surprise: Another mild surprise at Orari was created by Kilcato wining the concluding event, although his dividend was only a fifth of that of Gold Branch. He had shown encouraging form in previous races, and he struck a track to his liking. He is owned by Mr P. F. Campbell, who has leased him to Mr AV. Barr.

Promising: Mauretania put up a solid fight in the open sprint at Orari. This was her first race for some weeks, and her effort suggested that she will be again in evidence at later Spring meetings.
