INDIA’S FOOD SHORTAGE DELHI, September 22. An All-India Food Grams Policy Committee recommends that the Government should imporc one million ions of food grains annually, until further notice, with an additional half million tons in the first year to provide for a central reserve. The commitee admits there are shipping difficulties, but says it feels histified in pressing its recommendation, firstly, because the per capita food consumption is so low m India it cannot be greatly reduced; and, secondly, because Bengal Province, which, is the nearest one to the scene ci' possible large-scale military operations, is suffering great distress. LATER. _ The Calcutta Legislative. Assembly voted famine expenditure oi £2 640.000 for 1943-1944, compared with £390.000 last year. The Bengal Government has released large Quantities of flour and wheat at con trolled prices. The Calcutta fqod authorities confiscated half a million pounds of rice found in three shops in the city. The stocks are being sold at a controlled price.
