OPERA HOUSE —To-night: “The Captain is a Lady” and “Enemy Agents Meet Ellery Queen.” From the salty shores of New England, on the i eastern coast of U.S.A., seamen for centuries have embarked on adventure. They took uncharted seas and fiercest storms in their stride. But now, in “The Captain is a Lady,” showing at the Opera House to-night, a descendant of those intrepid seafaring men charts a course that would have made his ancestors blanch with fear. He chooses the stormiest of seas —an Old Ladies’ Home. Abe Peabody is an unruly cantankerous old salt, and when'he finds himself surrounded by bevies of old ladies, things happen — funny things that make for laughter. His stumbling but well-meaning attempts to play Cupid and the understanding friend in an Old Ladies Home result in riotous situations seldom equalled on the screen. Charles Coburn has the role of Abe Peabody, whilst Dan Dailey jnr., and Virginia Grey have the romantic roles. . ENEMY’ AGENTS MEET ELLERY QUEEN. REGENT THEATRE — To-night: “Whistling in Dixie.” The combination of tense action, suspense, thrill, mystery and a screwball detective that made “Whistling in the Dark” such a not of feverish fun is functioning again, this time in “Whistling m Dixie. This picture, which is showing at the Regent Theatre to-night, presents Red Skelton, in the characterisation of “The Fox” radio detective. Skelton finds himself involved in the solution of a mystery when he goes to Dixie to be married and spcnci a quiet honeymoon. Buried treasure, a whistling parrot a rumed fortress, f'ooded dungeons and a baffling murder serve as nigmights to this hilarious comedy. . . , The supporting players include Diana Lewis, George Bancroft, Guy Kibbee and Celia Travers. R.S.A. SOCIAL Members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. will be entertained by the Ist N.Z.E.F. on Saturday evening next at Harker’s. Musid wsll be supplied by Ford’s orchestra, and other musical items are being arranged by Mr J. Duffy. Saturday’s function will be the first gathering of the Ist and 2nd N.Z.E.F. men. All old soldiers should attend and give their young brothers a good welcome.
