EAST MOLESEY MATCH (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 31. Lord Birdwood shook hands with the team at East Molesey, the oldest cricket ground in England, which the East Molesey Club is buying as a memorial to the late Captain F. E. Smith, New Zealand Artillery, killed at Alamein.Smith was educated at Dunedin and Wellington, and was an outstanding all-round cricketer. A record atendance of 2500 saw the Buccaneers lose by eight runs, F. T. Badcock taking six of their wickets for 36 runs. R. W. V. Robins batted for East Molesey. Spectators included Hobbs and Strudwick. The King sent a letter containing his best wishes. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, also sent a message. New Zealand Services beat Public School Wanderers by two runs. Wanderers scored 176 (Dempster five for 30, G. O. Rabone four for 65). New Zealand 178 for five (R. C. Stuart 69, Rabone 76, Dempster 14). This was the New Zealanders’ last match of the season. The next fixture will be football, on September 18, when the North Islanders will play South Islanders. Interest in the Dominion’s election is awakened by those of Eire, South Africa, and Australia, while the “Daily Mail” is publishing Mrs Roosevelt’s column, “My Day.” She tells how over the radio she “thanked those hospitable people who have been so kind to our men stationed here for taking them in their homes and doing so much to make them feel at home. Our men seem to have accepted the hospitality in the way it was offered. After a good meal they have helped wash the dishes, just as they would at home, and they have made friends.”
