The Riccarton racing centre promises to be once more well off for two-year-olds, and some, high class bred youngsters will soon be making their bow to the public. The first race for two year-olds will be the McLean Stakes at Dunedin next month, and no doubt Riccarton will be strongly represented in that classic. Up to last year the Ashburton County Racing Club provided the first juvenile classic, but it was dropped and the race, the John Grigg Stakes, was changed to a classic for three-year-olds. The majority of the Riccarton youngsters were given a run in the parade on the second day of the Grand National meeting, and although the sprint they had down the straight was not deemed to be in the nature of a serious try-out, some of the “babies” showed marked ability to get over the ground. One of these was Lady Sylvia, a bay filly by Foxbridge from Arawa Rose, purchased at the yearling sales for 275 guineas, and owned by Mr. A. M. Satterthwaite of Christchurch for whom she is being trained by. F. Christmas. She led the second division of the parade in a furlong sprint down the straight, and created a good impression. The first division was won by Bonny Flight by Salmagundi from Francolin, dam of some good ones, including Dark Flight, Ortyx, Gold Flight, Winning Flight and Royal Flight. She is being trained by J. Langford at Riverton, and even at this stage it can be suggested that she will go out first choice for the McLean Stakes. The runner-up to this filly was Trumpet Call, another filly by Battle Song from Knocklynn, dam of Knockfin and Good Scout. She is very small, and : although she seems to have plenty of speed, she is not likely to be much in evidence, at least not this season. . Others to show up in the first division were Lady Desirable by Gynerium from Desirable; Piccolo by Inflation from Sweet Music; a colt by Phaleron Bay from Miss Pippin, and a grey colt, to race as Falconbridge by Foxbridge from Grey Eagle. The last-named was not asked to go fast, but he took the eye as one with great prospects later in the season. L. J. Ellis, a probable addition to the ranks of trainers at Riccarton, has purchased the property for many years owned by A. McAulay, who is removing to another stable pioperty close by. Ellis, who will carry on as a rider, should do well as a trainer. He will be the fourth member of the Ellis family to hold a trainer s license* A. McAulay has two useful horses 'in his small team in Sir Gundi and Gavfort. The former has grown into a solid gelding, and should race prominently over middle distance this season. Gayfort is one of the biggest young horses at Riccarton. He has not been overdone by any means, ana this (as a four-year-old) should be ins best season. He is by Broiefort from Going Gay, and his display at the Grand National meeting was enc o u r a g i n g.
