RHINELAND BOMBED

RAILWAY CENTRE TARGET TWENTY-EIGHT R.A.F. LOSSES LONDON, August 31. Royal Air Force bombers were over the Rhineland last night, their main target being the town of Mun-chen-Gladbach, a railway centre about 30 miles north-west of Cologne. Mosquito bombers attacked the inland port of Duisburg, in the Ruhr. The raid on Munchen-Gladbach was made in cloudy weather, so that it was difficult to observe’ the i’ es Y ßs ’ but preliminary reports indicate that the bombing was well concentrated. Twenty-eight bombers are missing from all the night’s operations. A Berlin High Command communique said: Powerful enemy aid formations last night attacked West Germany and caused considerable damage and casualties. In daylight yesterday American medium bombers attacked targets near St. Omer in Northern France. One bomber is missing. Royal Air Force Typhoons raided French airfields. LUFTWAFFE’S COMMANDER. (Rec. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 31. General Guenther Korten has been appointed Chief of Staff of the Luftwaffe in succession to Colonel-Gen-eral. Jeschenek.
