An indication of the operation of one of the Waikato coal mines since the introduction of State control, following the strike last year was given by the Chairman of the Taupiri Coal Company, Mr. E. W. Alison, at the annual meeting to-day. The effect ol control upon the company was stated to be a decrease in production and an increase in costs. Mr. Alison said that the great need of increased coal production in wartime was fully appreciated, but unfortunately in 1942 a strike affected output. Mr. Alison stated that control was imposed in order to effect a quick settlement of the dispute. The company had co-operat-ed wholeheartedly in implementing the measures, and would continue to do so. Output for the latest year was reported to be 211,058 tons —775 tons below that of the previous year.—P.A.
