TIMBER MILL FIRE,
WAIHI, August 17
Damage estimated at £2500 was done by fire which broke out early this morning and practically destroyed a timber mill owned by'Buchanan Bros.. Waihi. The plant and some stacked timber were completely destroyed. The firm, which removed from the Waimata bush, near Waihi, to the present site about six months ago. is engaged in cutting pine and native trees under contract to the Government. About a dozen men are employed. The property was not insured. it is believed the fire started in a cookhouse. U.S.A. MARINE SENTENCED. WELLINGTON, August 18. The Commanding Officer of the United States Marine Corps forces in this area has announced the results of a general court-martial in the case Private Marion E. Cole, U.S. Marine Corps who was charged with conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline (assaulting and striking a civilian with a knife). Accused 1 was found guilty and sentenced to be confined for a long period of time in a naval prison at Mare Island, California, and then be dishonourably discharged from the U.S. naval service, suffering loss of civilian privileges attendant thereto.
