HOKITIKA, July 21

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock), Crs. L. S. Ross, E. W. Heenan, W. H. Stopforth, T. W. Duff, K. Aitken, C. Caliari and D. P. Stuart. P , Permission to plant flowering cheery trees in Hall Street was granted to the Beautifying Association. The Reserves Committee was authorised to remove the cabbage trees in Mac Andrew Square. These will be replaced by suitable shrubs. The financial statement showed receipts £1054/14/11, expenditure £503/5/6. Accounts amounting to £1266/3/3 were passed for payment. The foreman’s and sexton’s reports were read and approved. The sexton reported eight interments during June. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of June amounted to 38 cows, 17 heifers, 61 bullocks, 187 sheep, 16 lambs, 20 pigs, 41 calves. Fees for period £74/9/11; fees for corresponding month last year £B7 9/2. It was decided that the Council inspect the County metal crusher working before any decision was made to buy it. Mr M. H. Houston was appointed the Council’s valuer in connection with, the Borough leases. The proposed rate of 2/- in the £ -with a 21 per cent, rebate was approved. It was resolved to raise the bank overdraft by £5OO to £4OOO. CORRESPONDENCE Mr R. Ireland expressed his thanks to the Council for permitting him to use the unused portion of Weld Street (near Livingstone Street) for grazing purposes. The Secretary of the Hokitika Beautifying Association intimated that the Association is aiming to have as many trees planted on Arbor Day as is possible and is inviting residents to give every assistance to the Association. —Approved, subject to work , being carried out to the Council’s approval. Mr C. Boddington applied for permission to instal a septic tank on part section 786, Stafford and Bealey Streets.—Granted, subject to usual conditions.

The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, Christchurch, advised that in regard to the slippery nature of the decking of the Hokitika combined bridge in frosty weather that instructions had been given for the decking between the rails to be tarred and sanded, and hoped that this

would improve the condition of the bridge in frosty weather. The Secretary of the Local Government Loans Board, Wellington, advised that the Loval Government Loans Board having considered the application of the Hokitika Borough Council for consent to make a contribution to the aviation authority controlling the Hokitika Aerodrome of £lB/9/1 in excess of the statutory limit hereby consent to a contribution of £6B/9/1 by the Hokitika Borough Council for the year ended March 31, 1942.

Mr C. Cox, Hokitika, applied for road access to section 1030 Livingstone Street, near Stafford Street. — No action unless applicant builds. The executors in the estate of the late William E? Richards applied to transfer Municipal Reserves Nos. 536 and 536 A to Mr H. W. G. Park from February 1, 1943, at the present rental of 15/- per annum plus all rates as levied. —Granted. Mr George Appleton protested against the Council’s action in removing the street light at the southeast intersection of Park and Livingstone Streets to a point about two chains south of the original location. The Secretary of the Westland Hospital Board advised that the Board’s estimates for the year ending 31/3/1944 have now been approved by the Minister of Health. The levy on the Hokitika Borough Council amounts to £2585/13/5, a decrease of £54/2/2 on the previous year. As in former years the levy will be payable in nine monthly instalments, the first to be payable on May 31, 1943. It is proposed that the first payment snould be for £287/6/1 followed by eight equal payments of £287/5/11. J- W. Robinson, Hampden Street, stated that he desired to improve the Jollie Street frontage of his property, and asked that now the Council have cleared the growth would the Council fill in the depression left with the settling of the filling of the pipe drain and clear the remaining growth.—Referred to the Works Committee.

Mr Heaton C. Peart (1) asked the Council to deal with the stray dog nuisance in the Borough, and (2) also asked that arrangements be made to collect rubbish from all the houses in the Borough.
