REEFTON, May 20. Mr. V. Newcombe presided at the 42nd annual meeting of Inangahua Silver Band. Fifteen members were present. The annual report showed that during the period, there had been a steady decline in playing strength. Nine active members were serving with the Forces, and one playing .'member Lieut. R. Baird paid the supreme sacrifice. Mr. James Lawn, a life member, died during the year. The balance sheet showed that the band, was in a good position. The balance sheet and report were adopted. A discussion was held on the advisability of electing a managing committee and calling all band instruments in, for storage. After consideration it was decided to proceed with the usual election of officers. The election resulted as follows: President: Mr. V. L. Newcombe; Patron, Mr. E. Nicholson. Band Master H. L. Robinson. Deputy Bandmaster, Mr. E. Eager. Treasurer, Mr. A. G. Reid. Secretary, Mr. E. T. Baird. Conductor, Mr. E. Goodall. Band Sergeant, Mr. E. Elliston. Corporal, J. Cohen. Lance Corporals, J. Eager, C. D. Robertson. Drum-Major, Mr. T. Baird. Librarian M. Nichols. Vice-Presidents: Messrs C. Lawn, S. Newcombe, W. Harvey, M. S. O’Malley, F. Lynch, S. J. Butler, D. W. Robertson. The Secretary’s salary was fixed at .£8 per year. It was resolved that the band meet for practice twice per month. The secretary was accorded a vote of thanks for his work during the year. Mr. F. W. Archer, County chairman presided at the monthly meeting of the Inangahua District Patriotic committee. Present: Messrs J. Discacaiti, N. McMahon, J. Patterson, A. F. Wells, A. O. Stanley, W. Clayton and W. B. Auld (secretary). Westland Provincial Council advised the forwarding of a parcel of wool and also that. 40 hussifs were needed to complete the district quota of these supplies.—The Secretary advised that he would communicate with the ladies’ committee. The Chairman reported that he had procured 20 packs in sacking for the despatch of waste paper. Mr. Stanley reported the collection of approximately one ton of paper; he was anxious to have this removed. Mr. Auld said he had arranged for storage space for paper in Reefton until sufficient was on hand to despatch. The chairman said that no word had been received of the last despatch of paper by the committee; he considered that the position was not satisfactory. Mr. Clayton commented that the paper might be a liability and not an asset. '.lt was no use collecting if the funds did not benefit from the sale of the paper.—lt was decided to make further enquiries as to the disposal of waste paper. The Chairman said that some time /ago Reefton Women’s Institute made a waste rubber drive and collected much scrap rubber. This had been despatched but the Institute had received no advice of the receipt of the truck load of rubber and the committee had no credit for the money for the rubber. —It was agreed that the Minister of Supply be written to regarding the disposal of waste paper and also the waste rubber sent forward by the committee. Mr. James Patterson asked if the Local Rehabilitation Committee was still in office or had a new committee been formed. The chairman read a circular letter showing that the rehabilitation committees were being reorganised. The Treasurer, Mr. W. B. Auld reported the following receipts to date. Previously acknowledged £3,842/4/9. Received for the month: Ikamatua committee 9/5, T. R. Watson £l, Mrs., Miss King 5/-, Alexander Mine Employees 13/11. “A Friend” 5/-. Inangahua Junction committee £23. Reefton committee £6/10/-. Same proceeds of picture benefit entertainment, raffles etc., £27/8/9. Monthly total £59/12/2. Total receipts £3901/16/11. It was resolved that Mr. T. Peek be granted the usual official collector’s card for the conduct of entertainments at Landing for patriotic funds.

An official welcome home was tendered to Seaman Arthur Cochrane who has returned on sick leave. Mr. J. Discacaiti, chairman of Reefton Patriotic Committee and officials with Mr. W. G. Porter, president of the Reefton R.S.A. attended at the railway' station, and good wishes were extended.
