Mr. J. Hadcrbft left for Wellington, yesterday. Rev Father McKeefry, Editor of “Zealandia,” and Secretary to the Archdiocese of Auckland, is visiting Greymouth. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown, of Wanganui, are visiting the West Coast Mr. Brown was formerly on The staff of the Post and Telegraph Department at Greymouth.

On her departure for Wellington, Miss B. A. Stedman, formerly masseuse on the staff of the Grey Hospital, who has joined the Army Nursing Service, was. farewelled by members of the nursing staff.

A Westport Press Association telegram stated that the death occurred to-day of James Scanlon, J.P., aged 76 a native of Charleston. He was a former Mayor of Westport, Chairman of the Harbour 5 Board, and Chairman of the Fire Board.

Mrs. M. T. Feeney, who has been transferred from the Army Office, Greymouth, to the Social Security Department, Greymouth, was farewelled yesterday by members of the Army Office staff and presented with a gold compact. The presentation was made by Captain A. R. Curtis.

The Military Cross has been awarded to Second-Lieutenant R. A. Tinker, of New Plymouth. He was awarded the Military Medal last July and was commissioned three months later. His brother is Mr A. Tinker, of Pukekohe. The Military Medal has been awarded to Trooper E. Ellis, of Timaru. His father is Mr C. R. Ellis, of Timaru. —P.A.

The funeral of Mr. Charles Thomas Tassell, of Cobden, took place at Karoro Cemetery, this morning. The cortege included representatives of the staff of the Chief Post Office, Greymouth. Rev. Father Gregory celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father Longconducted the service at the graveside.

The selection of Mr E. E. Tirikatene, Member of Parliament for Southern Maori, for recommendation for appointment to the Ministry to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Hon. P. K. Paikea,'Member of the Executive Council, representing the native race was made by the Parliamentary Labour Party at a caucus yesterday. He will be the first Maori Member from the South Island to be appointed to the Ministry.—P.A.

The death occurred at the Westland Hospital, Hokitika, yesterday, of Mr Hugh O’Donnell, who had formerly resided at Brunner for 60 years. He was 87 years of age and was a native of County Tyrone, Ireland. Mr O’Donnell is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs Satherley (Taumarunui), Mrs Pitcher (Wellington), and Mrs O’Rourke (Hokitika), also one son, Alphonsus (Roa).

The following West Coasters are included in a list of sick, wounded and other personnel of the Second N.Z.E.F. which have recently returned to New Zealand: Private Ernest W. Charteris, Ruatapu; Driver John T. Harrop, Murchison; Sapper Sidney P. Higgins, Westport; Private Alan E. Molony, Westport; Private James W. Murphy, Westport; Temporary Sergeant Noel E. Nottle, Westport.

Now living in Hawke’s Bay, Mrs Jessie- M. L. Watt was 102 years of ago last Saturday. She had resided m Wanganui until two years ago alter arriving there from Scotland in 1862. A trained singer and pianist, her services were in demand for a long period of years and she made her last appearance in public, at the age of 80 years. In her 100th year she was the victim of an accident and since then has been bed-ridden. She had. a family of nine, of whom only three are living.
