Thursday’s meeting of the Runanga Debating Club was devoted to a series of two-man debates, each of ten minutes’ duration. The fact that the speakers were called on to affirm and refute the subjects impromptu added to the interest of the debates. The following were the subjects and the speakers: Messrs W. Williams and R. Bowman (Money is the root of all evil), H. Webb and R. McDonald (Manners maketh the man), L. O’Loughlin and A. Keown (A rolling stone gathers no moss), E. Pattison and W. Patterson (Virtue is too often its own reward), Ron McTaggart and J. Richmond (That the vow of obedience in the marriage ceremony is not conducive to marital happiness), J. Unwin and Robt. McTaggart (Honesty is the best policy), F. Baxendale and W. Patterson (As ye sow, so shall ye reap). Criticisms were given by the Leader (Mr. W. Wick).
