MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, May 19. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock), Crs. W. H. Stopforth, K. Aitken, L. S. Ross, E. W. Heenan D. P. Stuart. G. Heinz, C. Caliari and T. W. Duff. The Treasurer’s statement was j .r follows: —Receipts £414/7/4, expenditure £846/6/10. Accounts amounting to £1207/16/4 were passeC’Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of April amounted to 40 cows, 21 heifers, 52 bullocks, 23 j sheep, 95 lambs, 31 p.gs, and 0 calves. Condemned, 2 cows, 1 rmlock. Fees collected for month amounted to £96/17/2. Fees tor corresponding month last year £1O( 11 The Foreman’s and Sexton’s reports were approved. The Sexton reported 102 burials roi the 12 months, being only five snort of the record number during the influenza epidemic. The tender of Mr H. J. McGowan, Waitaha, for the extra mare was accepted. , The tenders of W. E. Ricnards and Son for printing of two years’ bal-ance-sheets were accepted. . Work on the footpaths and drains in the State Housing Settlement was authorised. Other work asked tor by the Housing Inspector was held over pending a report. The Council again declined to take over private dram°The Chairman of Reserves reported on the inspection of Cass Square. He and Cr. Duff recommended that a hedge be planted round the Square which would take the place of the felled trees in the meantime and also act as a shelter for the shrubs to be planted. The recommendation was adopted.

CORRESPONDENCE

The Trustees of the Methodist Church asked under what conditions a four-inch drain could be installed from the boundary of the church's property in Tancred Street to the Tancred Street drsjln.—Council would accept half the cost. R. A. Tinetti and others asked that the footpath on the west side of north Sale Street be pul in order and gravelled.—Referred to Works Committee for attention.

The Secretary of the Municipal Association advised that the number of Rehabilitation Committees has been extended and that one well be located in Hokitika, and asking that the local bodies choose a representative and forward the nomination to the Member for the district. —Cr. Duff was nominated. The Inspector of Health advised that he has been transferred to Westport, and extended his thanks to the Council for the co-operation and support which has been gt.ven to him by the Council and the Town Clerk during his term of office. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advised that supplies of barium carbonate arc now available for poisoning rats and mice. The District Agent of the Social Security Department advised that authority for the employment of five men under Scheme 13 has been extended for a further period of 13 weeks from June 28, 1943. L. J. Kirwan, Upper Sewell Street, applied for septic tank.—Granted, subject to Health Inspector’s approved. Kanieri Electric Ltd. notifying the provision of two new street lights.— It was reported that one of these lights was in the wrong place; it was decided to have this light shifted to the correct position. O. J. Hutchison conveyed thanks of residents for provision of street lights at the corner of Stafford and Livingstons Streets.
