REVERSE IN BURMA

(Recd. 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 18. A Japanese High Command communique says: We occupied the enemy base of Maungdaw on Friday. Mopping up is progressing. FIGHTING IN CHINA CHUNGKING, May 18. The Japanese are making a desperate efforts to capture strategical centres in the rich rice-growing area west, of Lake Tungting, using parachutists who arc endeavouring to cut communications and cause contusion in the Chinese rear. Most ol the parachutists were wiped out, and the remainder'are being rounded up. The Chinese’ drive against Ichang. which is" the westernmost point of the Japanese penetration, is also making progress. . The Japanese-are employing thirty thousand men in a new drive to southern Shantung, reported to be a reprisal for Chinese assaults in that area in the middle of April. A Chinese communique reports sanguinary lighting north of Lihsien on the outskirts of Tsingshih, but the Chinese are holding their ground.
