Mr E. Travers, Stores Manager, Public Works Department, Wellington, is visiting Greymouth.

Mr R. Trouland, Transportation Inspector. Wellington, is visiting Greymouth bn railway business.

Rt. Rev. P. W. Stephenson, Bishon of Nelson, will visit Greymouth in the coming week-end.

The funeral of Mr. John Samuel Geoghegan of Dobson took place this afternoon at the Stillwater Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. C. A. Scarfe.

The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr. John Gunn Polson, principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College since 1931, and a prominent figure in educational activities in the Dominion. Mr. Polson was 62 years of age.

The death occurred in Wellington on Monday of Mr. Gerald (Tim) Keating, aged 53. A native of Greymouth, and a son of the late John Keating, he left to reside in Wellington many years ago. He had been in ill-health for some time. He is survived by his wife.

The funeral of Mr. John Donovan Cullen took place at Karoro Cemetery this morning, and was largely attended, the cortege including representatives of the Public Works Department staff at Greymouth and the various sports bodies with which deceased had been associated. Rev. Father Gregory celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father Long assisted by Rey. Father Flaherty conducted the service at the graveside.

The Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to ActingFrederick Thornton Peters, D. 5.0., D.SC.. R.N., for valour in taking His Majesty’s ship Walney on an enterprise of desperate hazard into the harbour of Oran on November 8. Capt. Peters led his force through a boom towards the jetty in face of point blank fire from shore batteries. Blinded in one eye, he alone of seventeen officers and men on the bridge survived. His ship reached the jetty disabled and ablaze, and went down with colours flying. Capt. Peters lost his life in a later special mission.—8.0.W.
