DECISIONS AT GREYMOUTH

The Armed Forces Appeal Boaid concluded its Greymouth sitting yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. Meldrum presided, with him Messrs P. J- McLean and A. Panther. Mr. C. F. Shapcott was Secretary. . Robert Francis Woodhouse, electrical engineer, appealed on his own behalf and for Herbert William Beems, journeyman electrician. Woodhouse said he was aged 41, married with two children, Grade 1, and Beems was aged 21, single, Grade 1. Beside Beems he had two apprentices, including his own son. His business repaired and serviced electrical machinery including rewinding, which was done by his firm alone on the Coasu He could hardly cope with the work offering and certainly could not do oO without Eeems. —Both adjourned sme The Concrete Pipe Co. (Mr. J. WHannan) appealed on review lor inc release of Jack Edward Cooper, metal worker, Mr. J. Griffin, managei, stated that the staff was down td eleven compared with 30 before the war. Reservist had been with the company for nearly five years and was the only experienced metal worker left with the firm. Greymouth Sash and Dooi ‘Co. Ltd. (Mr. Jamieson) for Dexter Hodgkinson, joiner. Sotherans, Ltd. (Mr. Jamieson) for John James Skeats, joiner, and John Anderson Mann, foreman. E. O. Haussman (Mr. Jamieson), for himself and Harry Roland Stanway, painters. E. W. Rathbun (Mr. Hannan) lor Ronald Hudson Lee, labourer. The Board intimated to the Builders’ Committee that the time was coming when there would be an extreme call on Grade 1 men for overseas service and that provision should be made as far as possible in allotting work to release such men. They must be prepared to take only such work as would enable them to exclude these men. Westland Transport Ltd. (Mr. Hannan) appealed for Robert S, Chant, crane driver; George O’Brien, William David Clark, lorry drivers; Leonard Hugh Lee, Angus Scott McLean, truck drivers; and George Watson Thompson, public accountant. Mr. J M. Eadie gave evidence for the firm and Mr. J. S. Robertson for the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association supported the appeals for the drivers. All were adjourned sine die. Cecil Roy Wylde (Mr. Jamieson), "arage and motor bus service, appealed on review. Owing to the shortage of skilled labour his could not get anyone to look after his business if he had to leave. There were six buses, live driven by miners. The other driver was a Grade 3 man.—Adjourned sine die. Dunn’s Transport Ltd., (Mr. Taylor)' appealed for Thomas James Dunn. Lenin Dunne and Hawtrey Francis Elwood, cartage contractors. Brendon Dunn, a director, gave evidence of the duties of reservists as drivers. They could not carry on the business with less than four men, and the increased coal output meant more work. They were also carting flax. The Mining Controller strongly supported the application in regard to Elwood. All cases were adjourned sme die. A. B. Spiers, Kumara, appealed on review for John Gavin Malcolmson, service car driver. He had not been able to secure a substitute and could not do the work himself. He was negotiating for the sale of the service, out finality had not been reached.— Adjourned three months for review.
