In the election for the position of Secretary of the Grey Valley Miners’ Union, Mr. J. White, with 110 votes, was elected, the other candidate being Mr. A. Hoggarth, who received 27 votes. The previous Secretary, Mr. J. Myers, resigned on account of his departure from the district.
In what was stated to be the first case of its kind in the Gisborne district. a moneylender, Samuel Dudley. was fined 10/-, with costs, on each of six charges of accepting pension and social security benefit certificates as securities for loans. The police pointed out that the certificates bore the inscription that it was an offence for them to be held as security.
A man described by the Army authorities as “a keen and efficient soldier,” who had been released from camp for civil work against his inclination, was described by his employer to the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Greymouth, to-day, as being unsatisfactory. “I can’t put up with him,” said witness “I wish he could be returned to camp.” He added that the youth had expressed a desire to return to the Army. The Board satisfied both parties by ordering the boy’s return.
