SEAMAN’S ALLOWANCE.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, —Through the mediuip of your paper I would like the public of New Zealand to know of the regulations of our Royal N.Z. Navy. There has returned to Reef ton Seaman Arthur Cochrane. He was a member of H.M.N.Z.S. the corvette “Moa,” which was sunk by enemy action off the Solomons on April 7 of this year. There were five men killed and 12 wounded, Cochrane amongst the wounded. He was rescued after an hour in the water, unconscious. Of course he lost everything. All he had on was a bathing suit and his life belt. He is on sick leave, and he has to renew his dress unform at his own expense, which will cost him at least £l4. I am sure no New Zealander ever expected her gallant seamen to be put to this expense. I am writing this to further Seaman Cochrane’s case, and hope the regulations will be altered to assist future seamen. All returned soldiers are allowed a mufti allowance, so why should not the sailors get a similar amount. Yours, etc A. G. WELLS, Secretary, Returned Services’ Assn, (Reeftbn Branch).
