FATAL INJURIES. AUCKLAND, May 16. A pedestrian suffered injuries from which he later died in hospital when he was knocked down by a light Army motor-truck on the Great South Road. . A locomotive and seven waggons of the Taumaruhui-Stratford mixed train were derailed when it ran into a slip in the cutting between Nihoniho and Toi Toi on Saturday night. Although the locomotive came to rest on its side, the crew escaped unhurt. It is hoped, although it is by no means certain, that the line will be cleared for the overnight Auck-land-New Plymouth express.

HOTEL ON FIRE INVERCARGILL, May 17.

About three o’clock this morning, the Nightcaps Hotel was completely destroyed by fire, believed to have originated in the kitchen. The fire Jiad a good hold before the occupants awoke. They had only time to get out in night attire. Fortunately, the weather was calm, and the residents .of the township were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby garage and two shops, though the windows were broken by the heat. The hotel was a two-storeyed wooden structure of twenty rooms, built sixty five years ago. The licensee, Frank (Ward, his wife and family and two boarders on the premises, lost all personal property. Ward recently returned from camp.
