BEEF VALUES LOWER

CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. With a much larger entry of fat cattle at the Addington Sale yesterday than a week ago, there was a 'further slight fall in values. Twotooth ewes were still in good demand, 'and the best of the aged sheep sold ■ satisfactorily, but for the rest the market dragged. Store Lambs: The highest price for ewe lambs was 24/3 for a line of Corriedales from North Canterbury. Medium to good ewes made from 19/6 to 21/4, and small and inferior sold i’’om 15/3 to 18/-. Best wethers made from 19/6 to 2.1/-, good 17/6 to 19/-, medium 15/- to 16/9, and inferior 10/9 to 11/7. Store Sheep: Of the total yarding of about 15,000 store sheep there were only 1200 two-tooth, including lines of shipped Romney sheep. The sale was exceptionally good, and prices of last week were fully maintained. The

best of the shipped ewes made up to 43/-, good 36/- to 38/6, and medium 26/6 to 28/9. There were several pens [ of halfbred ewes from North Canterbury, and the best of these made up to 40/-. Prices lor the next grade ranged from 25/6 to 31/-, and some pens of inferior sheep sold from .19/6 to 22/6. Freezing buyers took a lot of old and inferior ewes to be dispatched as “potters,” the prices ( ranging from 4/- to 6/-. The best price for shipped ewes was 30/- for a pen of four-tocths, and 150 four, six. and eight-tooths, big framed and early shorn, made 29/-. Fat Lambs: There was only a fair supply of heavy lambs, and any pens of these were eagerly sought after’ by the trade. Store Cattle: A pen of two-year-old 11 ere ford-cross steers sold at £B/3/6, and a pen of younger similarly-bred heifers made £5/12/6. In an entry of Black Polls, four steers made £7/6/and eight cows £4/18/6. A pen of Hereford-cross cows made £5/13/6. Top price for one well-grown steer was £ll/12/6. A line of 11 Black Polled bulls, made £9/3/6 and an'clher of 12 realised £B. Dairy Cattle: Best second and third calvers made up to £l7, good £ll lo £ 14/1/-, medium £B/10/- to £lO 10/-. In the heifer line, there were few yarded, and tops of .these also made up to £l7, the balance being of a medium quality and prices ranged from £9 to £l2.
