CAPETOWN, April 4. The South African Government has adopted the recommendation of a Select Committee substantially to increase from June 11 next the pay of all ranks of the South African defence force, except that of the officers. The basic pay of a European private with eighteen months’ service

is being raised from fifty-two pence to seven shillings a day. Naval personnel and war prisoners will also receive increases. Women volunteers with dependents will be on the same basis as men with dependents. General Smuts appointed the Select Committee to bring the South African rates of pay into line with those of other Dominions.
