SECOND FRONT

FRENCH EXPECTATIONS

NEW YORK, April 3. “The New York Times’s” Berne correspondent says: Reports from France indicate all Frenchmen have but one thought in mind—the probable date of a second front. Trustworthy sources describe groups of resistance devoting their full energy to preparing aid for a British-Ameri-can landing. Their greatest concern is to do nothing rash lest the extent of the details of organisation be revealed before the impending struggle. Meanwhile, reports from the Balkans indicate increasing German nervousness in Eastern Europe, it being reported that Hitler received King Boris of Bulgaria at Berchtesgaden and demanded immediate armed participation by Bulgaria in the fence of the “fortress of Europe, also five Bulgarian divisions for the occupation of Serbia where General Mikhailovitch’s guerrillas are still resisting Axis forces. The imposition of a curfew at many points on the Black Sea coast is also reported, it being stated that the population in this area is being evacuated. M. Laval told the French Cabinet that a quarter of a million French workers left France for Germany between January 1 and March 31. They included 77,000 young Frenchmen who recently were called up under the compulsory labour service. The Vichy radio says that the French Cabinet has ordered all Frenchmen aged between 16 and 70 years in the country districts to work on the land. It also has banned town and country fairs. FAKE RAIDS. LONDON, April 4. A warning to the French people that the Germans may try fake commando raids on the French coast to discover Allied sympathisers has been broadcast by the 8.8. C. and the Algiers radio. A spokesman, on behalf of the In-ter-Allied High Command, said: “We believe the Germans intend to stage these fake landings. You must receive all rumours of Allied landings with the greatest reserve. Listen to the Allied radios. We will inform you when the right moment arrives sibri tco Kevievving Greek Army units in Cairo, the Greek War Minister (M. Karpanyiots) declared: “It will not be many months before the invasion of Greece is begun.”
