ON THE SEAS
DOMINIONS’ CONTRIBUTIONS
RUGBY, March 5. The growing contribution of the Dominions to the sea war, both in ship construction and active service, is the subject of appreciative comment in London naval quarters. A substantial Canadian contribution includes over forty pel’ cent, of the present corvette building programme and is partly for the United Kingdom Government and partly for the Canadian Government. Even New Zealand, which was not a shipbuilding country in the past, is lending some assistance in the construction of various types of small auxiliary vessels, while heavy minesweepers, being built in Australia, are valuable for anit-submarine work, as well as minesweeping. The growing South African navy has seen service in the Mediterranean, and further developments in the Union’s naval activity are awaited with interest. Already, the coast defence forces have been of great value.
