An Auckland telegram announced that the death has occurred, after a long illness, of Mrs. Ruby Phyllis .Massey, wife of Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P. for Franklin.

Messrs K. G. Archer, J. Kelly, H. T. Lee, and N. R. Stanton, members of the Christchurch. Manpower Appeal Committee, which sat in Greymouth to-day, will return to Christchurch this evening.

Mr. K. James and Mr. B. O’Donnell, of the staff of the Customs Department, Greymouth, have left to join the ground staff of the R.N.Z.A.F. Their positions have been filled by Mr. S. McLellan (Westport) and Mr. J. Pike (Greymouth).

Mr. L. A. McNeil, of the locomotive branch of the Railways Department at Greymouth, who recently received advice of his transfer to Christchurch, has now been advised that his destination will be Palmerston North. With Mrs. McNeil, he will leave Greymouth on March 20.

The death took place at Greymouth, yesterday, of Miss Eleanor Watson, at the age of 86 years. Born in Cumberland (England), she came to the Dominion 30 years ago, residing at Dobson for some time. Foi’ the last 16 years she had lived at the Old People’s Home. She is survived by a niece Mrs. A. Southward, of- Runanga. A private interment, will take place on Monday.

Believed to have been 100 years of age, Mr. Charles Henry Mellish, of Kaui’i, died in the Whangarei Hospital on Wednesday. Mr. Mellish, who was born in London, could only estimate the date of his birth, all efforts to secure documentary evidence having failed. As a boy he ran away to sea and rose from cabin boy to master, leading an adventurous life. In 1874 he came to New Zealand and, after being engaged in whaling and sealing, settled at Dunedin. After living in various parts of the South Island and following a variety of occupations, he moved north 17 years ago to Kauri, where he lived until his death.
