CROSSING COLLISION
FIVE MEN INJURED.
CHRISTCHURCH, March 4. Five Christchurch men were seriously injured in a level-crossing accident at Belfast this afternoon. The men, all of whom are freezing works employees, were travelling in a light car and had just left the works when the accident occurred. They are:—Lester Feutz, married, 30 years of age, of 30 Tuckers Road, who suffered concussion and other injuries. John Dobbin, married, 48, of Bell’s Private Hotel, Manchester Street —concussion. Thomas Gifford Lawson, married, 43, of 12 Onslow Street —concussion, head injuries, and fractured leg. Sidney J. Smith, single, 40, of 94 Sherborne Street—head injuries. John Stevenson, married, 40, of 95 Trafalgar Street — concussion, head injuries, fractured ribs.
It is understood that Stevenson was the driver of the car. The accident occurred on the Factory road crossing, which is a short distance from the Belfast railway station. The train, which comprised an engine and van only, was on its way to Belfast. CARS COLLIDE. DUNEDIN, March 4. A serious motor collision occurred near Balclutha last evening about 5.30 as a result of which five persons are in the Balclutha Hospital. A car driven by Mr. H. H. Lyall, general secretary, of Balclutha, collided with a car driven by Mr. Campbell Stewart, a driver employed by Balclutha Taxis. Lyall had with him, as a passenger, Mr. J. R. Copland, Mayor of Balclutha, while the other car had as passengers, Mr. and Mrs. Greenfield, and Mrs. L. H. Henry of Auckland.
All except Mr. Stewart were admitted to hospital suffering from injuries of a more or less serious nature. Messrs Lyall and Greenfield sustained fractured legs, and Mesdames Greenfield and Henry had broken arms. Their condition this morning was satisfactory.
