KUMARA NOTES

The Kumara School Committee met on Wednesday evening. Present: John Reedy (chairman), F. Rudkin, R. Chant, B. Becker and H. Hamer (hon. secretary). The Headmaster (Mr L. J. Thwaites) reported for the period ending February 26th:—Roll number 74. The workman employed on the ground was covering the large stones in the process of levelling the ground. He would like the Committee to visit the ground, with' a view to planning improvements. Extra reading is required for Standard II upwards, the lower classes being well provided for.. Miss O’Callaghan, of Greymouth, relieved for the mohth as teacher, and had proved capable. Mrs Rollo had commenced duties on Monday. About 35 scholars will take part in the School Sports at Greymouth on Friday. Mr Ford, of . Greymouth, has offered to bring out a concert party to raise funds for the school. The floor again needs oiling. It was resolved to close the school on Friday to allow teachers and scholars to attend the School Sports at Greymouth. Mr W. S. McClymont sent plans and specifications’ suitable for a proposed swimming pool at the school. The Chairman said that as the borough pipes were now being laid through the school ground the Committee should suggest a suitable valve for the proposed bath being put in while the job was in progress.— Resolved that Mr Reedy be deputed to bring the matter before the Borough Council with Mr Chant and the Headmaster.

It was reported that the caretaker had left for Christchurch. The Secreparty stated that the duties of caretaker were being carried out in the meantime.—Resolved to pay the acting-caretaker additional fee for attending to the dental clinic while the Dental Nurse is in attendance at the clinic.

The Dental Nurse wrote stating she would arrive in Kumara on March 8, and be on duty for some time at the Dental Clinic.

The Committee had been questioned in regard to, the average attendance which at times was apparently not satisfactory. The headmaster stated that in most cases the absentees were on the sick list and that being so the Truant Officer could take no action. Members, however, thought that parents should see to it that their children attended more regularly.
