ELECTION OF SPEAKER LONDON, March 2. The Daily Express political correspondent says: As the Deputy Speak:er loses his power because of the i death of the Speaker, the House of i Commons will meet again under Mr. [Clark. Mr. Eden or another will an'nounce the King’s wish that a new [Speaker be appointed. Thereupon two 'members will propose a second election. A certain Member who will be protesting his unworthiness, will be “dragged” to the chair. The present Deputy Speaker, Colonel Clifton Brown, is favoured. Others in running are Major Gwilym Lloyd George, and Mr. W. S. Morrison. KING AS FACTORY WORKER LONDON, March 4. The King has become a part-time worker in a war factory, reports the “Daily Mail.” He stands at a bench from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. for two evenings a week, turning out special parts .of an R.A.F. gun. The King’s interest was aroused a few months ago when members of the staff of the Royal Household took up work in a small munitions plant. After visiting the men to see how they were progressing, the King said to the foreman: “This is very good work. Is it difficult? I might manage to put in a few hours a week.” The King there and then donned overalls and joined a shift. He passed the tests and was pronounced proficient. He has since clocked in regularly twice a week and his never been late. FREEMASONS’ GRANTS LONDON, March 4. The Earl-of Harewood was re-elect-ed Grand Master at the Communication of the United Freemasons’ Grand Lodge of England. The meeting decided to give £5OOO to the Red Cross. It was reported that £27,500 had been raised for relief of distress arising from the war as a result of the sale of Masonic jewels which brethren had surrendered.
