INCOME TAXATION.

(Reccl 2.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 4. The Opposition amendment to secure the redrafting of the Income Tax Assessment Bill is not acceptable to the Government. Opposition criticism of the Ball in its present form is based less on the amount of taxation than on the method of its collection. The motion by the Opposition Leader (Mr. Fadden) seeks the. establishment of an expert committee to investigate the workings of the Bill. Mr. Fadden also advocates the collection of portion of the money needed in the form of compulsory loans. It is understood the Government has the support of three Independent members on the taxation Bill, so that the defeat of the amendment is expected. PAYMENTS FOR “MISSING” CANBERRA, March 3. Until the fate of missing Australian servicemen is definitely known the Commonwealth Government will continue the payment of their allotments and allowances. Announcing this decision, the Army Minister (Mr. F. M. Forde) said to-day that little information was available about many of the Australians posted missing in Greece, Crete, and also in Malaya. Originally the payment of missing men’s allowances and allotments was scheduled to cease after six months, but these had been continued, and the War Cabinet’s decision merely legalised the 'position. The payments will now be continued up to the end of the war.
