WESTLAND COUNCIL MEETS

A brief agenda confronted the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council when it held its monthly meeting in Greymouth last evening, satisiactory reports being received of the campaign in various district!’, notabiy Kum'ara. . T . r , . Mr. A. Pi. Elcock (Mayor ol Hokitika) presided, also present being Mrs. F. W. Shallcrass and Messrs F. A. Kitchingham. F. H. Denton. J. A. Murdoch, T. G. Jamieson, T. E. Coates, A. B. Spiers, J. Unwin. M. Houston, E. W. Kennedy, W. Claytort, J. W. Greenslade, and D. J. Evans (Secretary). . The Treasurer’s report indicated that receipts totalled £634/1/11, including £6l/7/- from the fnangahua Committee. £ll6/8/1 from the Grey County Committee, £2BO/12/4 from the Hokitika Borough Council and £72 from the Kumara Committee. Payments totalled £l2O 16/-, comprising £73/12/2 lor wool and £ll/17/6 proc Ms of raffle (National Board), £B/5/9 (Grey County Committee) and £27/0/7 (Grey Women’s Committee) for supplies. The Bank account indicated deposits at £24,786/5/5 and current account £lOll/12/2. Mr. Evans reported that of the £13,000 levy £lO,OOO had still to be raised within seven months, , „ Mr. Kitchingham stated that Greymouth had not finalised the .-Air Force Band accounts yet, but there would be close on £4OO to be handed in. J , rT . .... Mr. Houston stated that Hokitika would recommence the weekly shop days on Friday next. Mr. Evans said it would be possible to send £lOOO to Wellington shortly. However, there was an urgent need for more ticket sellers. Mr. Greenslade said the gambling element was not paramount: the object should be for people to make, sav a weekly donation of a shilling. Mr. Murdoch undertook to dispose of 50 tickets and Mr. Kitchingham explained that the proceeds oi these would be donated to Hokitika s QU Mr.’ Elcock said it had been sugnested that, to stimulate competition, each part of a county be given a quota, but Mr. Evans said it would be impracticable to determine tne basis of such a quota. Members agreed that m rural cm>tricts people preferred;, to give to presentations for individual men. MATERIALS FOR PARCELS

He had made application to Wellington for the required goods last November. Members made it clear that no blame was attachable to Mr. Evans, whose work was entirely satisfactory, and it was decided to advise the National Board of the Council’s dissatisfaction with, the arrangements. Mr. Murdoch suggested that individual contributions be invited for the specific purpose, acknowledgment to be made through the Press. Mr. Greenslade concurred, saying I the Council must be careful to apply I the money to the purpose for which it was raised.

Mr. Spiers withdrew his suggestion in view of the fact that a grant had already been made.
