HOKITIKA, Nov. 17

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock presiding over the following: Crs. T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart, S. G. Havill, L. S. Ross, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, W. H. Stopforth and K. Aitken.

The Treasurer’s report showed: Receipts £452/9/3. Expenditure £1,455 9/6. Accounts amounting to £1,456 11/1 were passed for payment. The Abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of. October amounted to 35 cows, 45 heifers, 29 bullocks, 141 sheep, iambs nil, 20 pigs, 3 calves. Condemned, one sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £B4 6/1 as compared with £5B/14/6 collected for same month last year.

Considerable discussion took place <m the subject of reserves.—lt was decided io graze sheep on Cass Square for a period. With regard to Mac Andrew Square, Cr. Heenan suggested abolishing the Hower beds, putting in the paths necessary, and putting the rest of the area in lawn. It was also resolved to abolish the flower beds in Cass Square. Tenders are to be called for the grazing rights. The Reserves Committee’s report was read and several recommendations were made. Vandalism at the Cass Square Pavilion was noticeable several windows being broken. It was decided to have an inspection made of the roof of the Free Public Library. Il was decided to make application to the Public Works Department for hire of the Department’s grader. Ci\ Caliai'i was appointed deputychairman of the Works Committee. This appointment was made necessary as the chairman, Cr. Havill will be leaving for camp in the near future.

The Health Inspector reported that the Westland Dairy Company was about to install a mechanical stoker which would abate the smoke nuisance from its factory. Ci'. Heinz reported on the inspection of a new tar boiler. It was quite suitable and would speed up the deliveries of boiling tar for tar-sealing purposes.—Decision was deferred. The West land County Clerk advised that that Council had resolved to devote £5O p.a. towards the maintenance of the Hokitika Cemetery. The amount to be payable in part, each half year, for a period of five years, then the matter will be reconsidered.—Accepted. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, forwarded analyst’s report of sample of water taken, from Hokitika reservoir on September 29. The water is quite satisfactory. Mr. E. W. Heenan, applied for permission to instal a septic tank at his residence in Beach Street.—Approved subject to usual conditions.

The District Agent, Social Security Department, advised that the Controller of Manpower has approved of the extension of subsidy at the rate of £3 10/9 per man week, from September 28 to December 25, 1952. The Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills Ltd., application for sub-division of section in Fitzherbert Street, was approved.
