REEFTON NOTES

REEFTON, October 21. Forty-eight hours of rain at Reefton, and district, has been of immense benefit to farm, and garden crops, and with temperatures almost at midSummer level, growth is encouraged. Stock feed is plentiful. At the monthly meeting of the Inangahua Couty Patriotic Committee, Mr. F. W. Archer presided. The Greymouth Harbour Board advised that a cheque for £2OO had been forwarded to the Westland Provincial Council for allocation among the Patriotic Committees in the Harbour Board’s rating area. A list of allegations were received from the Westland Provincial Council. The Inangahua County’s share was £22/16/4. Mr. Discaciati pointed out that in a newspaper report or the last Council’s meeting, it was stated that the Inangahua Committee had received the £2OO. Alexander Mine Ltd., forwarded the sum of £l/6/7 donation from employees. The Ikamatua Patriotic Committee advised it was decided to recommend to the Inangahua Committee that the grant of £2 made recently to a returned soldier be increased to £5. It was also decided that it be a recommendation to the Central Committee that the men returning to the district be granted £5. It was unanimously decided to increase the grant of £5. The chairman referred to the recommendation from the Ikamatua Committee, and stated, in his opinion, every case should be dealt with on its merits. It was decided the Ikamatua Committee be advised accordingly. Mrs. W. H. Betts, Oweka, forwarded four Balaclavas to the Committee and was thanked. * Mr. Clayton, the Committee’s representative on the Provincial Council stated that the Committee’s recommendation for the imposition of a direct tax for Patriotic purposes had been dealt with at the recent meeting. a conference was being held in Wellington next month and the matter would probably be finalised. Mr. Discacaiti reported that fifteen cases containing 88 parcels had been forwarded. The Chairman said that Mr. and Mrs. Discacaiti were to be thanked for the trouble they had gone to in the assembling and packing of the parcels. Mr. Discacaiti said that to date over 700 parcels had been sent from the Inangahua County.
