HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.J HOKITIKA, September 22. At the Hokitika Borough Council’s monthly meeting, the Mayor, Mr.. G. R. Elcock, presided, the following Councillors being present: Crs. W. H. Stopforth, C. Caliari, G. Heinz, S. G. Havill, I. S. Ross, E. W. Heenan, K. Aitken. The Finance Statement showed: Receipts £1591/3/5, expenditure £1703 13/3. Accounts amounting to £lllB 5/9 were passed for payment. The Town Clerk was authorised to arrange an appeal to the Industrial Manpower Committee for the release of the night soil contractor from the Mental Hospital Department. The Overseer’s and Sexton’s reports were approved. Repairs to Sexton’s house were authorised, Sexton to do work himself and Council to provide material.

The Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered during month of August amounted to 15 cows, 22 heifers, 72 bullocks, 142 sheep, 24 pigs, 3 calves; condemned, one cow. Fees collected for month amounted to £75/0/6, compared with £56/12/6 for the corresponding period last year. The caretaker reported on damage to property on Cass Square and the matter was referred to the Clerk lor action.

,Cr. Caliari reported on enquiries made concerning starting places of service buses. —The report was considered satisfactory. Owing to its dangerous condition, it was decided to remove the flagpole on the Town Hall. Inward correspondence included: — W. C. C. Weiblitz offering sections 514 and 515, Block 19 to Council at £7 10/- each.—Dealt with in committee.

Mr. Clifford Cox, application for extraordinary water supply to bach on beach. —Connection to be made off Mr. Collyer’s supply, who consents. Mrs. I. D. Inteman, application to instal septic tank on section 1795, Hampden Street. —Granted, subject to usual conditions.

The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advising that he has appealed to the National Service Department (Manpower Committee) for the release of Mr C. J. Nightingale to undertake the work of sanitary contractor for the Hokitika Borough area. George Edward Sparkes, offering to continue the sanitary contract which has expired, month by month at the existing rate of £55/16/8 a month; one month’s notice on either side to terminate the arrangement which is to commence on September 1, 1942.— Accepted. Dr. B. L. Wilson, urging the Council to allot numbers to houses in the borough, and pointing out the inconvenience and difficulty of finding patients’ houses, particularly at night. Also letters on the same subject from the Rev. Keith Hadfield, and Rev. J. Finerty.—Clerk to obtain estimate of cost.

The Methodist Church Trustees, stating that the paddock at the rear of the Methbdist Church is lowlying and floods easily, and asking whether Council can dump any waste spoil in the lowlying parts when they are carting spoil in the vicinity of the land. —Approved when spoil available. Mrs. A. Davern and 11 other householders, pointing out that the smoke from the Westland Dairy Factory chimney is a nuisance, and asking that the nuisance be abated.—Referred to Health Inspector for report. The Hokitika Harbour Board, forwarding a copy of resolution respecting the imposition of 5 per cent, rebate and 10 per cent, penalty on Hokitika Harbour rates levied for the year ending September 30, 1942. From A. L. Groufsky, applying for permission to instal septic tank.—Granted subject to usual conditions. From J. R. Lawrence, complaining of flooding at property in North Sewell Street. —Referred to Overseer . From G. Lakin, applying for water connection to shop in Revell Street.—Granted.
