CHUNGKING, August 16. A Chinese communique states: The arrival of 5000 reinforcements, making a total enemy strength of 25,000 men, enabled the Japanese garrison at Lichwan to launch a counterattack on Friday night against encircling Chinese forces. The battle is still raging.
DEFENCE OF JAPAN
NEW YORK, August 17
The Tokio radio quoted a War Office announcement that Lieut.General Ushiroku, former Chief of Staff of the China forces, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Central Defence headquarters, Japan, and promoted General. The Asahi Shimbun commented that the appointment is significant and shows the increased importance of the defence of the Mother Country, especially the east coast, since the first phase of the war operations in Asia has ended. Lieut.-General Shozo Kawabe has succeeded General Ushiroku in the China post.
