DANES AGAINST “NEW ORDER”

FAITH IN ALLIED VICTORY

Denmark, chosen by the Nazis to be the "model” occupied State, is allowed a Government without power and an army and navy without ammunition.

This was stated in London recently by Mr. Christmas Moller, Minister of Commerce in the Danish Government after the German invasion of Denmark, who, with his wife and son, had just escaped to this country.

“The King and Government are allowed to deal only with matters of internal policy,” he said. “The army and navy are permitted to exist, but many of their guns and ships have been stolen from, them.” Six Danish torpedo-boats were now being used by the enemy.

The British and United States occupation of the Danish Dominion of Iceland, Mr. Moller said, had brought a general feeling of relief. The last thing they wanted was for the Axis to get hold of Iceland. Tea and coffee were completely unobtainable in Denmark. Milk, in the most concentrated agricultural country in the world, was highly diluted. Since the occupation the production of butter had fallen by a third. Margarine was not available for home consumers. Pig-killing had been naived, and the output of eggs had declined by more than two-thirds. “None but the few rich people can afford to buy many of the necessary foods. Meals in restaurants are very expensive, and the middle and lower classes cannot afford them. We realise that there is nothing in the socalled ‘new order.’ Ninety-eight per cent of the population is looking forward to the day when England and her Allies will have won the war. As in other countries, Denmark has her traitors and quislings. But in Denmark they have no active power and they are not represented in the Government. Out of a total of 225 Members of Parliament only two are quislings, and they are despised and hated in all circles. No honest men will co-operate with them, and even the Germans have had to acknowledge that the Danish Nazis are useless as instruments.”
