FRANCO PLANNING ATTACK?
NEW YORK, August 12. The “New York Daily News,” in a copyright article based on information provided by an agent of antiVichy forces, who recently escaped from Paris, said: “General Franco emboldened by a promise from Hitler to give him Portugal, Gibraltar and the Azores, is feverishly preparing to launch a blitzkrieg against Portugal.” The article says: A Spanish army of two million men is ready to march upon Hitler’s word. A chain of military airports from Santander southward has been completed. Moreover there are three large factories producing a minimum of 450 planes a month. It is estimated General Franco has a striking force of 10,000 planes. It is stated General Franco believes he can accomplish Portugal’s downfall, within five days, and then turn his full strength against Gibraltar. Preparations, it is said, include fortifications in Snanish Morocco, assuring General Franco of control of the western entrance of the Mediterranean, if the whole campaign were successful.
